EDIT: The Spots are starting to appear… Here’s the first one. The effect pictured below is the man to cat transformation. More soon…
So, remember the Nine Lives Trailer VFX I posted about a while ago? Well, we’re on to cutting TV spots. And, in an effort to streamline the ‘man into cat’ transformation from the film so it fits in a :30, I once again “mocked up” a little effect in FCP X. Actor throws magical stuff at man, man transforms into cat. 3rd party help from Coremelt Slice-X and Drive-X and Andy’s Better 3D for lining up the backplate. Also the FCP X keyer, draw mask and a ripple effect. It looked pretty cool. So cool, that the studio (and Director) now wants it to not only finish in my spot, but go into a bunch of others.
There’s a lot going on in this innocuous pile of clips…
Why will it be interesting? Well, I cut it using a watermarked feature and low res dailies, so I now have to rebuild it using clean sources. The actual transformation part should be easy, I can use the tracked “magic” I made and lining up the shots is no biggie. I can also reuse the existing green screened cat daily. Because I shrunk it way down from the original it looks fine.
But the shot of the actor tossing the “magic” required me to replace his head, as he was talking in the shot that had the proper hand motion. Might be a little tricky. None of this is in the movie by the way, I just cobbled it together from random dailies and a couple parts from a scene.
So, once again, “temp” VFX done right in the FCP X timeline were, uh… not so temp. Lots of people will soon see the result, though only you will know where it came from. Unless, you know, I screw it up….
Clean sources arrive soon, I’ll keep ya posted…EDIT:
