So, in lieu of any actual content here lately, I have a little effect if anyone wants it. There’s no “strobe” effect in FCP X, so I made one. It just freezes a set amount of frames for a jerky playback. Cheesy, but maybe useful? You can roll your own in Motion, but if you’re lazy, here ya go:
Unzip the file and stick the whole folder in your Movies>Motion Templates>Effects folder. You can make a sub folder in the Effects folder called “Custom” or something first, then put this Strobe folder in it so it’ll sort nicely.
The “mix” slider adjusts the uh… mix 😉 and the “amount” slider adjusts the percentage of the original that plays. 0 just freezes the first frame, and 100 plays the clip with no strobing.
One of these days I’ll add something useful here again, but until then… this is your consolation prize. 🙂 Happy editing!
Actually that could be really handy! I need to learn how to use Motion.
THANKS!!! Love your blog.
Cool, hope it’s useful. Motion is great, I have no idea what I’m doing and am able to accomplish some pretty cool simple stuff. If you’re serious about it, check out Simon Ubsdell’s free tutorials, they’re really good. http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7c46tWEb2grLQ95OGLxBJQ Have fun. 🙂
i can’t get to work in fcp 10.1.1 pls help
Seems to work here in 10.1.3… Make sure to set the “mix” slider all the way to 100 for the full effect.
not tried it yet but hopefully this will be just what i need, much appreciated thank you!
Hope you find it useful. I don’t really use it, but I just tested it in the latest version of FCP X and it works fine. 🙂
I am unable to get this effect to pull up in FC 10.2….any ideas? I have it in the Motion Templates folder, but it never shows up in the FC browser for effects.
Seems OK on my systems… Do you have the “Strobe” Folder inside the “Effects” folder (or in a subfolder within it) in your Motion Templates Folder?
Thanks a lot. 🙏
Do I have to have Motion to use this?
Nope, just follow the instructions to install it, and it’ll appear in the Effect browser panel. 🙂
dang. there is no motion folder template thing in final cut pro. or maybe i have no idea where to find it.
if you have suggestions, please let me know. i’m on el capitan.
Hey Gina… it’s not terribly intuitive, but you’ll fine the “Motion Templates” folder inside your “Movies” folder. Inside it, you’ll find all the subfolders for various effects, generators titles etc. 🙂
there is no “Effects” folder inside Movies>Motion Templates>?? so I made one, but when I paste all the plugin files inside nothing happens, it won’t show up in Final Cut Pro.
If you have FCP X, then there absolutely should be a User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder. If not, something odd is going on.
This is fantastic thank you. Saved me hours of work!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
How do you access the mix and amount sliders? I have the effect in final cut but I can’t seem to find the sliders anywhere!
Thanks for this!
It works very well, but often when I apply it I get weird jerks, as if instead of playing each frame one after the other it made a succession of tiny loops. Do you know where this may come from?
